Macau-China Digital Library

Created by the Observatory for China with the National Library, it is supported by UCCLA and sponsored by Macau Foundation.

The Macau-China Digital Library has Portuguese descriptions written between the 16th and 19th centuries, fundamental to the History of Macau and its role in the World, which was a pioneer in the pivotal relationship between the West and China.
But it also has descriptions of all the continents and seas navigated by the Portuguese, as the selection criteria for books and documents (which are fully digitized, from cover to back cover) in this Library is that they contain the word Macau or China, at least once in the entire work, this means that the Library includes, in addition to monographs, chronicles and histories of Portugal written between the 16th and 19th centuries, even though the majority of its pages are dedicated to descriptions of Europe, Africa, America, and only a few pages are about Asia.

The Macau-China Digital Library is an important instrument for the study of the history and historical and intellectual heritage of Africa, Brazil, and the East in general; It has a digital format with clear graphics, with simple access, but very visually appealing, yet rigorous and scientific. Consultation at the Macau-China Digital Library is online and free to all national or international users. The historical documentation and its content are made available and accessible through 4 different forms of consultation:

- Name of the authors of the works;
- Title of the work;
- Date of publication of the work;
- New adittions

The Library is in continuous development, it can be consulted in 4 different languages – Portuguese, Mandarin, English, and French (during the current 4th phase). The Digital Library currently provides around 200,000 pages of complete books and manuscripts, periodicals, cartographies, and, recently, critical editions, tracking cultural and historical heritage from the 16th to the 20th century.

This platform has been allowing consultation and downloading on their personal computers by students at various school levels and university institutions - Asian, European, American, and African - to carry out their research work with greater comfort and accessibility.

The Library is another pedagogical instrument at the service of the school community (secondary and university) and readers in general. Its great advantage is that it allows direct, international, and immediate access to historical sources that until now were mostly only accessible in Portuguese archives or difficult-to-access editions. On the other hand, when digitized for the first time, many of these works automatically begin to be preserved from the natural degradation of time, guaranteeing their safeguard for the reading and instruction of future generations.
